Amateur observation of a brown dwarf

The news notes section of the January 2006 issue of Sky and Telescope (page 24) reports on Dave Tosteson's visual detection of brown dwarf LSR 0602+3910, an apparent first for amateur observation. Dave contributed the largest set of visual observations contained in the Arp book.

New image of Arp 117

Don Goldman, a contributor to the new Arp book, has recently posted his remarkable color image of the region around Arp 117 and Arp 79. The chaotic arm structure around IC 983 and companion IC 982 is striking. Arp 79 is NGC 5490C, the small blue spiral below the Arp 117 pair.
